Young M.A is an American rapper, songwriter, and lyricist. She entered the spotlight with her 2016 single “Ooouuu”. Her discography includes the EP, Herstory (2017), and the mixtape, Sleep Walkin (2015). Young M.A was born Katorah Kasanova Marrero on April 3, 1992, in Brooklyn, New York. She had an older brother, Kenneth, who was shot and killed in 2009. He was 20. Young M.A and her single mother moved to Virginia when she was about 7 years old. Her father was imprisoned at the time on a 10 years sentence. She eventually moved back to Brooklyn in her mid-teens.

CAREER
Young M.A worked at Shake Shack and T.J. Maxx to help fund her budding rap career. One of her biggest music influence was fellow NYC rapper 50 Cent. Young M.A gained early recognition with tracks like “Brooklyn Chiraq” and “Body Bag”. She released two mixtapes in 2015 ‘M.A The Mixtape’ and ‘Sleep Walkin’. Both projects were independently released and have since racked up thousands of downloads and plays.

Young M.A’s debut single “Ooouuu” was released in May 2016. It was produced by U-Dub of NY Bangers. The track peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It sparked a number of unofficial remixes featuring artists like French Montana, Nicki Minaj and The Game. It also spawned an official remix featuring 50 Cent. Young M.A’s debut EP, Herstory, was released in April 2017. It charted at #166 on the Billboard 200. It was led by the single track “Hot Sauce”. Young M.A picked up two BET Award nominations in 2017, including one for best new artist. She was featured on T-Pain’s 2017 single “F.B.G.M”.

In addition to music, Young M.A was offered a role as “Betty Bars” on the Fox musical drama series, Empire. She turned down the role to focus on her music. She made reference to this in her freestyle “Check”.
