ORIGIN
XXXTentacion was an American rapper, songwriter and frontman of the rap crew Members Only. He rose to prominence with the 2016 single “Look at Me.” His discography included the mixtape, Revenge (2017), and the albums 17 (2017) and ? (2018). The album ’17’ won the 2018 American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B album. The posthumous albums ‘Skins’ and ‘Bad Vibes Forever’ were released in December 2018 and December 2019 respectively.

XXXTentacion was born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy on January 23, 1998, in Plantation, Florida. He had two siblings, Arianna and Aiden. He grew up in Broward County in cities like Pompano Beach and Lauderhill. X attended Piper High School but dropped out before completing his diploma. He was also reportedly kicked out of his local church choir as a child.

CAREER
XXXTentacion’s musical style included a mix of hip hop, trap, heavy metal and R&B. He cited rapper Tupac Shakur as his main influence. His early releases included the 2014 EPs ‘The Fall’ and ‘Ice Hotel’. XXXTentacion was a member of the rap crew ‘Members Only’. The other members were Ski Mask the Slump God, Wifisfuneral and Craig Xen. They collaborated on a number of projects.

XXXTentacion released two EPs in 2016 ‘ItWasntEnough’ and ‘Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer’. The latter was heavily influenced by indie music and heavy metal. XXXTentacion’s debut single “Look at Me” was released in January 2016. It was re-released in February 2017 by Empire Distribution. The track peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #18 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song has been compared to Drake‘s “KMT” from the playlist More Life (2017). X’s 2017 projects included ‘Bad Vibes’, ‘I Need Jesus’ and ‘Revenge’. His debut studio album, 17, was released in August 2017. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 500,000 copies. X was named to the 2017 XXL Freshman Class alongside Playboi Carti, Kamaiyah, Ugly God and 6 others.

In January 2018, XXXTentacion informed his social media fans about his new venture. The “Look at Me” rapper promised fans a gaming channel on the YouTube platform. He also hinted that his videos would be inspirational/motivational in nature. X dropped his sophomore album, ?, on March 16, 2018. It was released on the Bad Vibes Forever label. The album produced two singles “Sad!” and “Changes”. It featured guest appearances from Joey Badass, Matt Ox, PnB Rock, Travis Barker, and a few others. XXXTentacion posthumously won the 2018 AMA for Favorite Soul/R&B album for his debut 17. He was also nominated for New Artist Of The Year.

Skins, XXXTentacion’s first posthumous album (3rd album overall) was released in December 2018. It was released by Bad Vibes Forever and Empire Distribution. The album’s lead single “Bad” charted at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other tracks from Skins include “Guardian Angel”, “Train Food” and “I Don’t Let Go.” Kanye West and Travis Barker made guest appearance on “One Minute”, the album’s 7 track. X’s 2nd posthumous album, Bad Vibes Forever, was released in December 2019 by Empire. It featured production from DJ Carnage, John Cunningham and JonFX. The album was supported by the singles “Hearteater”, “Bad Vibes Forever” (w/ PnB Rock & Trippie Redd) and “Royalty” (w/ Ky-Mani Marley, Stefflon Don, and Vybz Kartel).

PERSONAL
XXXTentacion died on June 18, 2018, at the age of 20. He was shot and killed outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. His death was confirmed by the Broward County Sheriff’s Department. During the attack, he was robbed of a Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 by his killers. Dedrick Williams, Michael Boatwright, Robert Allen and Trayvon Newsome have been indicted for the crime. XXXTentacion was 5ft 6in tall and he was of Egyptian, Indian, German, Jamaican and Italian descent. His net worth was estimated a $5 million USD. He’s survived by his son, Gekyume Onfry, born in January 2019.

XXXTentacion had multiple legal issues over the years. He was arrested and charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in summer 2016. He was arrested again in October 2016 on charges of false imprisonment, witness tampering, and aggravated battery. He was released on house arrest in December 2017.
