Seattle native, UMI is an American female recording artist out of Los Angeles, California. Her music of choice revolves around R&B, neo-soul, and lo-fi alternatives. UMI was born Tierra Wilson on February 9, 1999, in Seattle, Washington. Due to her family’s musical background, she was introduced to the art from a young age. At age 5, she began scripting songs and started playing various instruments, including the piano, guitar, and ukulele. It wasn’t until high school that UMI started uploading her music online.
CAREER
Though UMI’s music started going viral in 2017, some of her earliest work can be traced to 2015. On March 5, 2017, she officially released “Happy Again.” The track was well received and would accumulate hundreds of thousands of views within months. Its music video currently has an approval rating of 99% on YouTube. That summer, UMI followed up with the single “Friendzone.” Similar to its predecessor, it performed well above average. The accompanying visual was unveiled a year later. As of November 2019, it has been streamed over 3 million times on YouTube.
In 2018, UMI released her first EP, “Interlude” and dropped her most accomplished single, “Remember Me.” The project landed on January 25 and featured 4 tracks. It was spearheaded by the single “Midnight Blues” and released by 408 Records. That October, “Remember Me” saw daylight. A major hit, the song was produced by D’Mile and the music video was directed by Eddie Mandell and company. Within its first year, “Remember Me” was streamed over 40 million times on platforms including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. Another single that garnered attention was “Butterfly.”
In 2019, UMI unveiled her 2nd EP and released several songs that went viral. “Love Language,” her 2nd project, was dropped on October 30, 2019, by Loud Robot. It featured 4 tracks and hosted one artist, Yeek. The EP was anchored by two singles, Love Affair and Breathe. She recently uploaded the official music video for “Breathe.” Despite her fairly short time in the industry, UMI’s music has made steady progress. The fact that she is a student, UMI has to find the right balance between music and school.
