Toni Morrison was an award-winning American novelist, editor, and professor. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her 5th novel ‘Beloved.’ Given name Chloe Ardelia Wofford, she was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. He parents were Ramah and George Wofford. She had 3 siblings, Raymond Allen, George Carl, and Lois. Morrison earned his diploma from Lorain High School in 1949. She completed her BA in English from Howard University in 1953, and her Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1955. The title of her thesis was “Virginia Woolf’s and William Faulkner’s Treatment of the Alienated.”
CAREER
Morrison taught English for nine years (2 years at Texas Southern University followed by 7 years at Howard University). Her first book ‘The Bluest Eye’ was published in 1970 by Holt McDougal. It recorded low sales until it was added to the reading list at the City University of New York (CUNY). Some of Morrison’s popular novels include Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977), and Beloved (1987). Her latest novel ‘God Help the Child’ was published in 2015. Outside of novels, she also wrote 9 non-fiction, 2 short fiction, and 5 children’s literature with her son Slade Morrison.
Morrison won multiple awards over the years, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1988), the Nobel Prize for Literature (2000), the National Humanities Medal (2000), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2012). In 2016, she was honored with the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction. Morrison was the subject of the documentary films Imagine – Toni Morrison Remembers (2015), The Foreigner’s Home (2018), and Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (2019). The latter was directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It featured appearances from Oprah Winfrey, and Angela Davis among others.
