Tilman Fertitta is an American billionaire businessman and television personality. He’s best known as the owner, chairman, and CEO of Landry’s, Inc. He acquired the Houston Rockets NBA team for $2.2 billion in 2017. Tilman Joseph Fertitta was born on June 25, 1957, in Galveston, Texas. His father, Vic, is a seafood restaurant owner. He grew up working in his father’s restaurant. Fertitta attended Texas Tech University followed by the University of Houston. He majored in business administration and hospital management.
CAREER
Fertitta started out in the restaurant business as a partner at Landry’s Seafood in 1980. The following year he opened ‘Willie G’s Seafood and & Steaks’ in Uptown Houston. Fertitta assumed full ownership of Landry’s Restaurants in 1988. Landry’s, Inc. went public in 1993 and now operates more than 500 restaurants and entertainment venues throughout the United States. The company employs thousands of workers and boasts more than $3 billion in assets. In addition to restaurants, Fertitta owns multiple hotels such as the Key Largo, San Luis Resort, and the Hilton Galveston Island Resort. He ventured in casinos in 2005 with his purchase of Golden Nugget Casinos. He also owns the Golden Nugget Atlantic City which was formerly called Trump Marina. Fertitta owns a number of amusement parks, boardwalks, and aquariums. He purchased the Houston Rockets basketball team for $2.2 billion in August 2017. Prior to that, he was an investor in the Houston Texans NFL team.
Fertitta was named to the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2004. He’s the second-youngest inductee behind Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies. He’s also a recipient of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Ernst & Young. Other honors include the 2013 Casino Journal’s Executive of the Year and the 2012 Amusement Today’s Person of the Year. He was dubbed the world’s richest restaurateur by Forbes in 2013. Fertitta currently serves as chairman of the Houston Children’s Charity, the Board of Regents University of Houston, and the Houston Police Foundation.
Fertitta is also known for the NBC reality television series, Billion Dollar Buyer. It involves small business owners competing for an opportunity to partner with Landry’s, Inc. The show premiered in March 2016. It was renewed for a second season following its success
