Susan Rice is an American public official and foreign policy analyst. She served as the 24th National Security Advisor and as the 27th United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Susan Elizabeth Rice was born on November 17, 1964, in Washington, D.C. Her parents Emmett and Lois separated when she was 10 years old. She has a brother named John. Rice attended National Cathedral School where she served as student council president and valedictorian. She earned a BA degree in History from Stanford University in 1986. She completed her MA and Ph.D. in international relations from New College at Oxford University in 1988 and 1990 respectively.

CAREER
Rice served as a foreign policy aide to politician Michael Dukakis during the 1988 presidential race. She worked as an international management consultant at the firm, McKinsey & Company, from 1990 to 1993. Rice began her tenure under the Clinton administration in 1993. She served as director for international organizations and peacekeeping for the National Security Council from 1993 to 1995. She served as assistant to President Bill Clinton and also as senior director for African Affairs from 1995 to 1997.

Rice was named Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in October 1997. She was recommended for that post by Madeleine Albright. During her time, she served as a head diplomat for African affairs during the 1998 terrorist bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. Rice was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2002 to 2009. She served as senior National Security Affairs advisor during Obama’s ‘Change for America’ presidential campaign. Rice served as the 27th United States Ambassador to the United Nations from January 2009 to June 2013. She was elected National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama. She held that office from July 2013 to January 2017.
