ORIGIN
Sridevi was an Award-winning Bollywood actress and film producer. She worked primarily in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada films. She was well regarded as the first female superstar of India. Her film credits include 16 Vayathinile (1977), Premabhishekam (1981), Himmatwala (1983), and English Vinglish (2012). Sridevi was born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan on August 13, 1963, in Sivakasi, India. Her parents were Ayyapan (d. 1991) and Rajeswari (d. 1997). She had two siblings, Srilatha and Satish.

CAREER
Sridevi made her acting debut in the Tamil film, Thunaivan (1969), directed by M. A. Thirumugam. She was cast as “Lord Murugan”, the Hindu god of war. Other early film appearances followed in Nam Naadu (1969), Kumara Sambhavam (1970), and Aathi Bhakta Kumbara (1974). She won the Kerala State Film Award for her performance in Poompatta (1971). Sridevi made her Bollywood debut in Julie (1975), starring Lakshmi and Vikram. She followed up with a starring role as “Selvi” in Moondru Mudichu (1976). Sridevi appeared opposite Kamal Hassan in Solva Sawan (1979). She co-starred with Jeetendra in the Bollywood comedy-drama, Himmatwala (1983). Sridevi appeared in a number of films alongside actors Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Jeetendra. Her 1990s films include Lamhe (1991), Gumrah (1993), Laadla (1994) and Judaai (1997). She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Asian Academy of Film & Television (AAFT).

Sridevi returned to the big screen in 2012 following a 15 years hiatus. She starred as “Shashi Godbole” in the comedy-drama, English Vinglish (2012). The film was directed by Gauri Shinde and it made 78 crores ($12 million USD) at the box office. Her recent projects include Bombay Talkies (2013), Puli (2015), and Mom (2017). Sridevi won 6 Filmfare Awards, including 4 for best actress. She was honored with the ‘Padma Shri’ civilian award in 2013. Other accolades include the Zee Cine Awards, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Stardust Awards, and the 2013 NDTV Indian of the Year award.

Sridevi died on February 24, 2018, at the age of 54. Her official cause of death was cardiac arrest. She passed away in Dubai. Sridevi was 5ft 6in tall and she was of Tamil and Telugu ancestry. Her personal net was estimated at $35 million. She was the highest-paid Indian actress from 1985 to 1992. Sridevi dated actor Mithun Chakraborty from 1985 to 1988. She was married to Indian film producer ‘Boney Kapoor’ from 1996 until her death. They had two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
