ORIGIN
Sergey Kislyak is a Russian diplomat and current Ambassador of Russia to the United States. He previously served as Russian Ambassador to Belgium. Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak was born on September 7, 1950. He’s fluent in English and French. Both his parents are from Ukraine. Kislyak studied at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in Moscow, Russia. He continued his studies at the USSR Academy of Foreign Trade where he graduated in 1977.

CAREER
Kislyak joined the Soviet Union Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977. He served as the Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the USSR to the United Nations in New York from 1981 to 1985. He was appointed First Secretary, Counselor at the Embassy of the Soviet Union in Washington, D.C. in 1985. He held that office until 1989. Kislyak served as Deputy Director at the Soviet Foreign Ministry from 1989 to 1991. He worked in the department of International Organizations.

Kislyak held prominent titles at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1991 through 1998. He was tapped as Russian Ambassador to Belgium by President Boris Yeltsin in 1998. He held that office from February 1998 through May 2003. During his tenure, he also served as the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to NATO. Kislyak held the title of Deputy Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2008. He was selected as Russian Ambassador to the United States by then-President Dmitry Medvedev. He was sworn into office on July 26, 2008. He currently serves under President Vladimir Putin.

Kislyak is at the center of controversies pertaining to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former National Security Advisor Michael T. Flynn. The latter resigned from his position as a result. Kislyak attended President Donald Trump‘s inauguration in January 2017. He reportedly met with Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner back in December 2016.
