Sally Yates is an American lawyer and former acting United States Attorney General. She served as Deputy Attorney General under President Barack Obama and briefly under President Donald Trump. Yates was born Sally Caroline Quillian on August 20, 1960, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents are Xara and Kelly Quillian. She has a sister named Terrell. Yates completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia in 1982. She graduated magna cum laude with a J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1986. She was an executive editor of the Georgia Law Review.

CAREER
Yates began her legal career at the King & Spalding law firm in Atlanta. There she practiced commercial litigation from 1985 to 1989. She was hired as an assistant attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia in 1989. Yates was named Chief of the Fraud and Public Corruption Section in 1994. She was promoted to First Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2002 and later to Acting U.S. Attorney. Yates was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2010 for the US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. She held that office from March 2010 through January 2015.

Yates was confirmed as Deputy Attorney General of the United States on May 13, 2015. She served under the 83rd Attorney General, Loretta Lynch. During her tenure, Yates focused on the daily operations of the Justice Department. This includes the four law enforcement agencies. Yates served as acting US Attorney General under the Trump administration from January 20, 2017, until her termination on January 30, 2017. She was fired by President Donald Trump because she refused to defend Trump’s immigration-related executive order. She was replaced by Dana J. Boente, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
