Carlos St. John Phillips was born on August 26, 1986, in Brooklyn, New York. He is 1 of 9 children. Much of his childhood was spent between Brooklyn, New York, with his mom and Georgetown, Guyana, with his dad. With that said, St. John was raised primarily by his mom, a preacher. Growing up, he looked up to his older brother like a father figure and tried to emulate his every move. He admitted to XXL that if his brother was a fisherman or a cop that he would still aspire to be like him. St. John started high school in Guyana and finished at South Shore High School in Brooklyn, New York.
CAREER
St. John grew up listening to reggae/dancehall music. In fact, the first live show he went to featured performances from Jamaica’s Beenie Man and Supercat. After getting into hip-hop/rap, he was drawn to Jay-Z‘s 4th album Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter (1999). However, St. John’s biggest inspiration was watching his older brother rap/perform. He even admitted to rapping his brother’s bars back when he was still in Junior high school. Carlos St. John wrote his first original wrap while staying in Guyana. He dropped his debut project, The St. John Portfolio, in March 2010. It was followed months later by the mixtape, In Association (2010).
In the wake of his debut project, St. John caught the attention of music executive Zach Katz. He was quickly flown out to Los Angeles, California, to write songs for BMG artists. Most notably, he spent 2 months writing for Rihanna but none of his tracks were ever picked up. After returning to Brooklyn, St. John co-wrote “No Interruption” for Hoodie Allen’s album All American (2012). He co-wrote songs “Crash” and “Rivals” for Usher’s 8th album, Hard II Love (2016). Other songwriting credits include “The Chief” for Jidenna, “Can’t Wait” for dvsn, and “Bad Thing” for Kiesza.
In 2016, St. John began releasing music under his current moniker “SAINt JHN.” His first track was titled “1999.” The supporting video has been viewed 800K+ times on YouTube. He followed up with tracks “Reflex” and “Roses.” To close out 2016, SAINt JHN opened for rapper Post Malone on the West Coast leg of his Hollywood Dreams tour. He was a featured writer on Jidenna’s song “Helicopters / Beware” from the album, The Chief (2017). The year 2017 also welcomed songs “3 Below” and “Hermes Freeystyle.”
SAINt JHN’s debut studio album, Collection One, was released in March 2018. It featured new songs like “I Heard You Got Too Litt Last Night”, “Selfish” and “Lust” with Janelle Kroll. SAINt JHN currently has a partnership with his Godd Complexx and LA Reid’s Hitco Records. He’s also signed to a management deal with Kareem “Biggs” Burke.
