Roy Halladay was an American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). He pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies. He was an 8x All-Star and 2x Cy Young Award winner. Halladay was born Harry Leroy Halladay III on May 14, 1977, in Denver, Colorado. His father, Harry Jr., was a pilot, and his mother, Linda, a homemaker. He had two sisters, Heather and Merinda. Halladay grew up in the suburb of Arvada, where he attended Arvada West High School. He graduated in 1995.
CAREER
Halladay was drawn to the game of baseball at a young age. He experimented with various field positions but showed the most promise as a pitcher. He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 17th overall pick in the 1995 amateur draft. Halladay made his MLB debut on September 20 1998 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He pitched a total of 12 seasons for the Blue Jays from 1998 to 2009. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2002 after recording 19 wins and 7 losses. Halladay won the 2003 Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the American League. He was also named the 2003 MLB wins leader.
Halladay pitched 4 seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2010 to 2013. He pitched a perfect game against the Florida Marlins on May 29, 2010. He pitched a postseason no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds on October 6, 2010, the second in MLB history. The first pitcher to achieve this was Don Larsen during the 1956 World Series. Halladay won a second Cy Young Award in 2010 (National League). His career stats include 2117 strikeouts and 3.38 ERA. Halladay announced his retirement in December 2013. Post-retirement he served as a guest instructor for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies. He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2015 and into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017.
