Rita Gam was an American actress and documentary filmmaker. She was born on April 2, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She grew up in New York City.

CAREER
Gam started out performing on Broadway before venturing into television and films. Her film debut was the 1952 film noir, The Thief, directed by Russell Rouse. She picked up a Golden Globe nomination for most promising female newcomer. Other early films include Magic Fire (1955), Mohawk (1956), and King of Kings (1961). In 1962, Gam co-starred as “Estelle Rigault” in Tad Danielewski’s film, No Exit. Her performance earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress. Gam was close friends with fellow actress, Grace Kelly. She served as a bridesmaid in Kelly’s 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier in Monaco.

Rita Gam died on March 22, 2016 at the age of 88. Her reported cause of death was respiratory failure. She passed away while staying at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Gam was 5ft 1in tall and was of French and Romanian ancestry. She was married to first husband “Sidney Lumet” from 1949-1954 and second husband “Thomas Guinzburg” from 1956-1963. She had two children, Kate and Michael Guinzburg.
