Richard Gere is an American actor, human rights activist, philanthropist, and sex symbol. His screen credits include American Gigolo (1980), Pretty Woman (1990), Runaway Bride (1999), and Chicago (2002). Richard Tiffany Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His late father, Homer, worked as an insurance agent, and his mother, Doris, was a housewife. He has four siblings, Joanne, David, Susan, and Laura. Gere attended North Syracuse Central High School followed by the University of Massachusetts. He studied philosophy and drama but never completed a degree.

Gere made his professional stage debut in a 1971 production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. In 1973 he was cast as “Danny Zuko”, the lead in the London stage version of the musical Grease. He starred as “Max” in the 1980 Broadway production of Bent. Gere’s feature film debut was the 1975 crime drama, Report to the Commissioner. He followed up with a supporting role as “Tony Lopanto” in the film, Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977). His first lead role was that of “Bill” in the romantic drama, Days of Heaven (1978).
Gere was dubbed a sex symbol following his lead role as “Julian Kaye” in the romantic crime drama, American Gigolo (1980). The film was directed by Paul Schrader and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Gere starred opposite Julia Roberts in the romantic comedy, Pretty Woman (1990). He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role as “Billy Flynn” in Chicago (2002). Other notable films include An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) with Debra Winger, Primal Fear (1996) with Laura Linney, and Arbitrage (2012) with Susan Sarandon.
Gere is a devout Buddhist. He co-founded the Tibet House in 1987 along with Robert Thurman and Philip Glass. He currently serves as chairman of the board for the International Campaign for Tibet. The Gere Foundation was established in an effort to reduce suffering and advocate for the Tibetan people. Gere has also supported a number of HIV/AIDS-related charities.
