Rasual Butler was an American retired professional basketball player. He stood 6ft 7in and played the small forward/shooting guard position. He played 14 years in the NBA for teams like the Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Los Angeles Clippers. His NBA career average stood at 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Butler was born on May 23, 1979, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother’s name was Cheryl Taylor. He was raised in the multicultural neighborhood of Point Breeze. Butler attended Roman Catholic High School followed by La Salle University. He was drafted into the NBA in 2002.

CAREER
Butler began his basketball career at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. During his tenure, he earned accolades such as Philadelphia high school player of the year. He was a third-team Parade All-American his senior year. He also played in the Sonny Hill League. Butler continued his basketball career at La Salle University. He played four seasons of college basketball with the La Salle Explorers. He was ranked 6th in the Explorer’s all-time scoring with 2,125 points. He was inducted into the La Salle University Hall of Athletes in 2008. He was also a 2x First-team All-Atlantic 10 (2001, 2002).

Butler was selected by the Miami Heat with the 53rd overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft. He started 28 of 72 games in his rookie season. He finished off the season averaging 7.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. Butler played two more seasons with the Heat before he was traded to the New Orleans Hornets. The trade involved 4 NBA teams and 13 players. He was traded once more, this time to the Los Angeles Clippers (2009). He was waived by the Clippers in March 2011. Butler played for the Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, and the San Antonio Spurs. He also played for the Tulsa 66ers (Oklahoma City Blue) of the NBA D-League. He was named the NBA D-League Impact Player of the Year in 2013. Butler had his best NBA season with the L.A. Clippers (2009-10), averaging 11.9 points, 1.4 assists, and 0.8 blocks. He also shot 84.1% from the free-throw line. He shot 57.1% from behind the arc during the 2010-11 season with the Chicago Bulls. He retired after the 2015-16 season with the San Antonio Spurs.

Rasual Butler died on January 31, 2018, at the age of 38. He was killed in a single-car collision along with his wife, singer Leah LaBelle. The accident occurred in Studio City, California. He’s survived by a daughter, Raven, from a previous relationship. Butler’s personal net worth was estimated at $3 million prior to his death. He made more than $20 million throughout his NBA career.
