ORIGIN
Preet Bharara is an Indian-American attorney and former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Dubbed a “crusader prosecutor”, he’s known for his high profile cases involving diplomats and foreign officials. Preetinder Singh Bharara was born to Indian parents on October 13, 1968 in Ferozepur, India. He has a younger brother named Vinit. The family immigrated to the United States and he was raised in New Jersey. Bharara attended Ranney School in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. He completed his A.B. degree in Government from Harvard College (1990) and his J.D. from Columbia Law School (1993).

CAREER
Bharara began his legal career as a litigation associate at the firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in 1993. He served at the ‘Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman’ law firm from 1996 to 2000. Bharara was tapped as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 2000. He was hired by then attorney Mary Jo White. During his tenure he prosecuted cases ranging from organized crime to narcotics trafficking.

Bharara served as chief counsel to Senator Chuck Schumer and as staff director of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. He led the committee’s investigation into the 2006 firing of several U.S. attorneys. Bharara was nominated as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York by President Barack Obama in May 2009. His nomination was unanimously approved and he was sworn into office on August 13, 2009. During his tenure he oversaw more than 200 assistant attorneys on such cases as terrorism and public corruption. He was fired on March 11, 2017 following his refusal to step down. The order to resign was issued by the 84th Attorney General Jeff Sessions on March 10, 2017.

Preet Bharara is a naturalized U.S. citizen and member of the Democratic Party. He stands 6ft tall and he’s of Indian descent. His net worth was reported as $1.69 million back in 2009. Financial disclosures from 2010 revealed that he held shares worth between $1 million and $5 million. Bharara is married to wife ‘Dalya’, a nonpracticing lawyer. They have three children and the family resides in New York.
