Paul Manafort is an American lawyer, political consultant, and lobbyist. He served as campaign manager on Donald Trump‘s 2016 presidential campaign. Prior to that, he was an advisor to George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, and Ronald Reagan. He’s also lobbied for controversial foreign leaders like Viktor Yanukovych, Ferdinand Marcos, and Mobutu Sese Seko. Manafort was convicted of bank and tax fraud in 2018. He was sentenced to 7.5 in jail in March 2019.

Paul John Manafort Jr. was born on April 1, 1949, in New Britain, Connecticut. His parents were Paul J. Manafort, Sr. (d. 2013) and Antoinette Marie (d. 2003). He had two brothers Robert (d.) and Dennis. Manafort attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He earned his BS degree in business administration from Georgetown University (1971), and his JD from Georgetown University Law School (1974).

CAREER
Manafort began practicing law shortly after law school. He worked with the Washington, D.C. firm, Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease, from 1977 to 1980. The firm specializes in areas like litigation, intellectual property, corporate law, and labor and employment law. In 1980, Manafort co-founded the lobbying firm, Black, Manafort & Stone, alongside Charles R. Black Jr. and Roger J. Stone. The firm was renamed Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BSMK) with the addition of Peter G. Kelly in 1984. Manafort opt-out of BSMK in 1996. He created a new firm, Davis, Manafort, and Freedman, along with Richard H. Davis and Matthew C. Freeman. During his tenure, Manafort lobbied for controversial foreign leaders like Viktor Yanukovych, Ferdinand Marcos, Mobutu Sese Seko, and Jonas Savimbi. He was criticized in the 1989 HUD scandal for using his connections to HUD to divert millions of dollars to rehabilitate a low-income apartment complex in Seabrook, New Jersey.

Manafort worked with President Gerald Ford in the mid-1970s as a delegate-hunt coordinator. From 1978 to 1980 he served as the southern coordinator for Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign. He was named to the Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation in 1981. Manafort served as an advisor to George H. W. Bush during his 1988 presidential campaign. He also advised Bob Dole during his 1996 campaign. Manafort joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in March 2016 as his convention manager. He replaced Corey Lewandowski as campaign manager starting in June 2016. His ties to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych drew media attention in August 2016. Manafort resigned from his post as a result. Kellyanne Conway took over as the new campaign manager, and Steve Bannon was named campaign chief executive.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began a criminal investigation into Manafort in 2014. This came shortly after Viktor Yanukovych was removed from office. He was also named a person of interest with regards to the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference with the 2016 presidential election. Manafort was also investigated by the CIA, NSA, FinCEN, and the DNI. It was confirmed that he was wiretapped by the FBI starting in 2014, before and after the 2016 presidential election. Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates were indicted in October 2017 by Robert Mueller‘s prosecutors. He was convicted of tax/bank fraud in 2018 and sentenced to 7.5 years behind bars in March 2019.
