ORIGIN
Monty Hall was a Canadian-American game show host, producer, and television personality. He was best known for co-creating and hosting the game show Let’s Make a Deal. His television credits include Video Village, Beat the Clock, and Cowboy Theater. Hall was born Monte Halparin on August 25, 1921, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His parents were Rose and Maurice Halparin. He had a brother named Robert. Hall attended St. John’s High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, followed by the University of Manitoba. He graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II and emceed shows for the troops.

CAREER
Hall performed in a handful of musicals/dramas while studying at the University of Manitoba. He worked briefly at the radio stations CKRC (Winnipeg) and CHUM (Toronto). He hosted the game show ‘Bingo at Home’ on WABD-TV. In 1955, Hall moved to New York City and became the anchor of the NBC radio program ‘Monitor’. He hosted the kid’s programs “Cowboy Theater” (WRCA-TV), and “Fun In the Morning” (WNEW-TV). He guest-hosted popular shows like Strike It Rich (CBS) and Twenty-One (NBC). Hall hosted “Video Village Junior” (CBS-TV) alongside Eileen Barton and Kenny Williams. He served as a radio analyst for the New York Rangers during the 1959/60 NHL season.

Hall and producer Stefan Hatos co-created the video game show Let’s Make a Deal. The show premiered on NBC in December 1963. It has since aired on ABC, CBS, and via syndication. The game show spawned the probability puzzle “Monty Hall Problem”. Hall hosted ‘Beat the Clock’ on CBS (1979-80) and later ‘Split Second’ on ABC (1986-87). His television credits include The Nanny, The Love Boat, Providence, and That ’70s Show. Hall retired from emceeing in 1991. He was also known for his philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. He headed several fund-raising campaigns for various charities. Hall was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1973, Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2002, and the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007. He was honored with the Order of Canada (OC) in December 1988.

PERSONAL
Monty Hall died on September 30, 2017, at the age of 96. His reported cause of death was heart failure. He passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Hall was 5ft 10in tall and he was of Jewish ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $10 million prior to his death. He was married to television producer ‘Marilyn Plottel’ from September 1947 until her death in June 2017. They had three children, Joanna Gleason, Sharon, and Richard.
