Mirai Nagasu is an American figure skater and 2x Olympian. She won bronze at the 2018 winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Her accolades over the years include 3x Four Continents medalist, 2x World Junior Medalist, and 7x U.S. national medalist. Mirai Aileen Nagasu was born on April 16, 1993, in Montebello, California. Her parents, Kiyoto and Ikuko, own a sushi restaurant. They’re both immigrants from Japan. Nagasu spent her childhood in Arcadia, California. She attended Arcadia High School and completed her diploma online through the Capistrano Connections Academy. She majored in international business at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Nagasu is fluent in English and Japanese. She held dual citizenship for the U.S. and Japan prior to her 22nd birthday.

CAREER
Nagasu switched from golf to skating at age 5. She cites Yuna Kim, Michelle Kwan, and Mao Asada as her biggest influences. Her coaches over the years included Sandy Gollihugh, Charlene Wong, Frank Carroll, and Tom Zakrajsek. Nagasu quickly worked her way through the juvenile, intermediate, and novice levels. She advanced to the junior levels for the 2006-07 season, winning both the Southwest Pacific Regional and the Pacific Coast Sectional championships. She won gold at the 2007 Junior Grand Prix finals. Nagasu competed and won silver at the 2007 World Junior Championship and bronze in 2008. She became the youngest female (14yrs, 250 days) to win the U.S. Senior Ladies title since Tara Lipinski back in 1997. Nagasu won gold at the 2008 U.S. Championships and silver in 2010. She finished with the bronze medal at the Four Continents Championships in 2011.

Nagasu made her Winter Olympic debut at the 2010 games in Vancouver, Canada. She was 16 at the time. She finished 6th in the short program, 5th in the free skate, and 4th overall. Despite finishing 3rd at the U.S. Championships, Nagasu was not selected for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Her second trip to the Olympics came in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. She won bronze as a member of Team USA. Nagasu made history as the first American female figure skater to perform the triple axel at the Olympics. She’s also the 3rd female from any country to accomplish said feat.

In 2018, Nagasu was named as a contestant on season 26 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Her professional dance partner is Alan Bersten. The all-athlete cast features fellow Olympic skaters Adam Rippon and Tonya Harding.
