Michael Che is an American stand-up comedian and writer. He co-anchors the Saturday Night Live sketch ‘Weekend Update’. He was a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2014. Michael Che Campbell was born on May 19, 1983, in Manhattan, New York. He was named after Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara. His parents are Rose and Nathaniel Campbell. He has 6 older siblings, including Lee, Laverna, Willie, and Kofi. Che grew up in the projects on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He’s a graduate of the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

CAREER
After high school, Che designed and sold t-shirts and paintings on the streets of New York. He worked briefly as a designer for Tommy Hilfiger. Che began his stand-up career in 2009 at the age of 26. His stand-up television debut was on a 2012 episode of the Late Show with David Letterman. He was crowned winner of New York’s Funniest Stand-Up Competition at the 2012 NY Comedy Festival. He was also dubbed one of the funniest comics by Rolling Stone and Variety magazine in 2013.

Che served as a writer on NBC’s Saturday Night Live from 2013 to 2014. He spent 3 months as a correspondent on The Daily Show from June to September 2014. During his tenure, he appeared on the segment “Race/Off: Live From Somewhere”. Che replaced actress Cecily Strong on SNL’s Weekend Update in September 2014. He serves as the sketch’s co-anchor opposite Colin Jost. He’s the first African-American to anchor the program since its inception. He was added to the main cast of Weekend Update during the third season. He’s also performed stand-up on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Che appeared in the comedy film Top Five (2014) starring Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson. His credits include Chinese Puzzle (2013), Lyle (2014), and the comedy series Detroiters. He was also a cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever. Che’s first comedy special was Comedy Central’s ‘The Half Hour’ in 2014. His hour-long stand-up special ‘Michael Che Matters’ premiered on Netflix in November 2016.
