Marvin Minsky was an American cognitive scientist, author, and the father of artificial intelligence. He was born on August 9, 1927, in New York City. He attended The Bronx High School of Science followed by Phillips Academy in Massachusetts. He sidestepped the army draft by serving in the Us Navy from 1944-1945.
Minsky completed his BA and Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard (1950) and Princeton (1954) respectively. He joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty in 1958 and co-founded their AI laboratory in 1959. He became the author of several publications including ‘The Society of Mind (1986)’ and ‘The Emotion Machine (2006)’.
Marvin Minsky died at the age of 88 on January 24, 2016. His cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. He was married to physician ‘Gloria Rudisch’ in 1953 and they had three children; Margaret, Julie, and Henry. He won several notable awards for his contribution including the ‘Turing Award (1969)’, ‘Benjamin Franklin Medal (2001)’ and the ‘BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2013)’.
