Martin Crowe was a New Zealand cricketer and commentator. He was 6ft tall and played as a right-handed batsman. He was born to parents Dave and Audrey Crowe on September 22, 1962 in Henderson, New Zealand. His cousin, Russell Crowe, is an Oscar-winning actor.

CAREER
Crowe made his first-class debut with the Auckland Aces in 1979. He later played for the Central Districts Stags, followed by Somerset and then the Wellington Firebirds. Crowe had an impressive 56.02 batting average after 16 years in first-class cricket. He ended with 392 first-class runs shy of 20,000. He was named New Zealand’s Young Cricketer of the Year in 1981.

In February 1982, Crowe made both his ODI debut and Test debut against Australia. He was appointed as New Zealand’s captain in 1990. Crowe played a total of 77 test matches and 143 one day international games during his career. He was named Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1985 and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1992. Following his retirement in 1996, Crowe served as a coach and television commentator. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2015.

Martin Crowe died at the age of 53 on March 3, 2016. His cause of death was lymphoma. Crowe was married to former Miss Universe “Lorraine Downes” from 2009 until his death. He’s survived by wife, daughter Emma and stepchildren Hilton and Jasmine.
