Mario Batali is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, author, and television personality. He co-owns several restaurants across states like New York, California, and Nevada. He’s also known for the television programs Molto Mario, Mario Eats Italy, and The Chew. Mario Francesco Batali was born on September 19, 1960, in Seattle, Washington. His parents are Marilyn and Armandino Batali. In 1975, the family moved to Madrid, Spain, where he attended high school. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Theater and Economics from Rutgers University (1982).

CAREER
Batali began formal culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in London. He dropped out after a few months to pursue an apprenticeship with renowned London chef Marco Pierre White. He spent roughly three years training in the Northern Italian village of Borgo Capanne. In 1993, Batali opened his first restaurant ‘Po’ with partner Steve Crane. It ran for 24 years until 2017. In 1998, Batali and Joe Bastianich opened the flagship NYC restaurant ‘Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca’. It was dubbed the “Best New Restaurant” of 1998 by the James Beard Foundation. The duo owns a number of other restaurants across the United States. His other business partners over the years include Nancy Silverton, Lidia Bastianich, Oscar Farinetti, and Dave Pasternack. Batali was named “Man of the Year” in 1999 by GQ Magazine. He won the 2005 James Beard Award for “Best New York City Chef”. His accolades also include the prestigious D’Artagnan Cervena award.

Batali made his television debut on the Food Network in the mid-1990s. He hosted the programs Molto Mario (1996-2004), Mario Eats Italy (2001-03), and Ciao America (2003-04). He was featured in the TV documentary series Spain… on the Road Again (2008-10). Batali co-hosted the ABC cooking show The Chew (2011-17). He was a celebrity contestant on the game show The $100,000 Pyramid (2016). His television credits include Iron Chef America, Brew Masters, Good Morning America, and The View. Batali’s film credits include As Cool as I Am (2013) with Claire Danes, and Bitter Feast (2010) with James LeGros. He voiced the character “Mr. Rabbit” from the animated film, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009).

Batali’s first book ‘Simple Italian Food: Recipes from My Two Villages’ was published in 1998. He followed up with ‘Holiday Food’ in 2000. His other published works include The Babbo Cookbook (2002), Molto Italiano: 327 Simple Italian Recipes (2005), Simple Family Meals from My Home to Yours (2011), and Big American Cookbook (2016). Batali founded the ‘Mario Batali Foundation’ in 2008. The foundation raises money for food and education for children. He’s a member of the board of directors for The Lunchbox Fund. He’s also a supporter of the David Lynch Foundation.
