Loretta Lynn was an American country music singer and songwriter. She was one of the most decorated female country musicians of all time. Her discography includes Coal Miner’s Daughter (1970) and Van Lear Rose (2004). Lynn was born Loretta Webb on April 14, 1932, in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She was raised in a coal-mining community by parents Clara and Ted Webb. She was the second of 8 children. Lynn was of Scots-Irish and Cherokee descent. She was named after the famed actress Loretta Young.

CAREER
Lynn began singing at her local church at a young age. She taught herself to play the guitar. She also performed at local venues with her first band, the Trailblazers. Lynn landed a recording contract with Zero Records in 1960. Her debut single “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” was released in March 1960. The track rose to #14 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Lynn later settled in Nashville, Tennessee, and before long she was signed to Decca Records. Her first Decca hit “Success” was released in April 1962. It became her first top-10 single after peaking at #6.

Lynn’s debut studio album, Loretta Lynn Sings, was released in December 1963 by Decca. It peaked at #2 on the country charts. Her 1970 album, Coal Miner’s Daughter, sold over 500,000 copies and was certified Gold by the RIAA. It was adapted into a 1980 film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Lynn’s other projects include Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind), You Ain’t Woman Enough, Fist City, and Van Lear Rose. She was also known for the more controversial “The Pill”, “One’s on the Way” and “Rated ‘X”. Lynn’s last 2 studio albums were Wouldn’t It Be Great (2018) and Still Woman Enough (2021). Both albums were released by Sony Legacy.

Lynn was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1983), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1988), and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2008). She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013. She’s won 8 CMAs, 4 Grammys, and 13 ACM Awards among other accolades.

PERSONAL
Loretta Lynn died on October 4, 2022, at the age of 90. She was buried next to her husband, Oliver Lynn, on their Hurricane Mills ranch in Tennessee. Back in May 2017, Lynn suffered a stroke at her Tennessee home and was admitted to a Nashville hospital. She also battled multiple cases of pneumonia and slips/falls over the years.

Loretta Lynn had an estimated net worth of $65 million. She was married to talent manager ‘Oliver Lynn’ from 1948 until his death from diabetes complications in 1996. They had six children: Patsy, Peggy, Jack Benny, Ernest Ray, Betty Sue, and Cissie. Jack Benny and Betty Sue died at ages 34 and 64 respectively.
