Lil Kim is an American rapper, model, actress, and reality star. She was born Kimberly Denise Jones on July 11, 1974, in the neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. Her parents are Ruby Mae and Linwood Jones. She has an older brother named Christopher. Kim attended Queen of All Saints Catholic school in Brooklyn. Her parents divorced when she was nine, forcing her to live with her father. Kim and her father had a difficult relationship, which resulted in her being kicked out at the age of 16. She dropped out of Brooklyn College Academy High School and later landed a job as a clerk at Bloomingdales.

Kim’s life changed for the better when she met east coast rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. She became a member of the group ‘Junior M.A.F.I.A.’ in 1994 and their debut album, Conspiracy, was released in August 1995. The album peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Player’s Anthem”, “I Need You Tonight” and “Get Money”.

Kim began her solo effort with the release of her debut album, Hard Core, on November 12, 1996. The album sold 78,000 copies during its first week and became certified double platinum by the RIAA. Her second album, The Notorious K.I.M., was released in 2000 at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart. It featured the singles “No Matter What They Say” and “How Many Licks?”. Kim and Foxy Brown began their hip-hop feud in the late 1990s. Both females grew in popularity as a result. Kim collaborated with Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mya on the 2001 hit single “Lady Marmalade”. The song held the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for five consecutive weeks. Kim also picked up her first Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration. Her third album, La Bella Mafia, was released in 2003. It saw production from Kanye West, Timbaland, and Swizz Beatz.

In 2005, Kim was convicted of perjury and conspiracy and sentenced to one year in prison. She apparently lied about her friend’s involvement in a shooting incident that took place in February 2001. Her fourth album, The Naked Truth, was released while she was serving time. Aside from rapping, Kim saw some success as a model and actress. She’s worked with Wilhelmina Models, Iceberg Fashion House, MAC Cosmetics, and Jacob & Co. She had a designer watch collection called ‘Royalty by Lil’ Kim’, and the clothing lines ‘Hollyhood’ and ’24/7 Goddess Collection’. Kim has played small roles in several films such as She’s All That (1999), Gang of Roses (2003), and Superhero Movie (2008). She was a contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2009.
