Laverne Cox is an American actress, reality star, television producer, and LGBT advocate. She stars as “Sophia Burset” on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. Her acting credits include the series ‘Doubt’, ‘TRANSform Me’ and the film Grandma (2015). Cox was born on May 29, 1984, in Mobile, Alabama. She was raised by a single mother, Gloria, a teacher. Her identical twin brother, M Lamar, is a musician. Cox studied creative writing and dance at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She attended Indiana University Bloomington followed by Marymount Manhattan College. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance.
CAREER
Cox made her television debut in a 2008 episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Later that year she became a contestant on the reality show ‘I Want to Work for Diddy’. The series aired on VH1 and it was executive produced by Sean Combs. Cox appeared in a number of short films including Betty Anderson (2000), All Night (2008), and Migraine (2012). She produced and starred in the 2010 reality series, TRANSform Me. In 2011, she co-starred as “Chantelle” in the dance film, Musical Chairs. The film was directed by Susan Seidelman and also stars Leah Pipes.
In 2013, Cox landed her breakout role on the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black. She was cast as “Sophia Burset”, an imprisoned trans woman. Cox’s role earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance. She was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and an NAACP Image Award.
