Kim Jong-un is the supreme leader of North Korea. He’s also the chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK). Kim was born on January 8, 1984, in Pyongyang, North Korea. His father, Kim Jong-il, was a military leader and ruler of North Korea from 1994 to 2011. His mother, Ko Yong-hui, was an opera singer. She died in May 2004 at age 51. His grandfather was Kim Il-sung. He has four siblings, Kim Jong-Nam, Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-Chul, and Kim Sul-song. Kim attended the International School of Berne in Gumligen, Switzerland. He continued his education at the Kim Il-sung Military University in Pyongyang.

CAREER
Kim Jong-un was named as a candidate for the Supreme People’s Assembly in early 2009. He became chairmanship of the National Defense Commission (NDC) in April 2009. Two months later he was named head of the State Security Department. Kim was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea in September 2010. He held that office until April 2012. He succeeded his father Kim Jong-il as the Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army following his death in 2011. He was sworn into office on December 30, 2011.

Kim Jong-un served as the First Chairman of the NDC from April 2012 to June 2016. He took office as Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea on April 11, 2012. He became Deputy to the 13th Supreme People’s Assembly on April 9, 2014. Kim Jong-un assumed office as Chairman of the WPK in May 2016. Later that year he created the new organization ‘the State Affairs Commission’. It replaced the NDC as the most powerful governing agency in North Korea.

PERSONAL
Kim Jong-un is about 5ft 7in tall and he’s of Korean descent. His net worth is estimated at $5 billion. He reportedly spends millions a year on expensive gifts (cars, alcohol, electronics, jewelry) on members of his circle. Kim Jong-un is married to Ri Sol-Ju. They have a daughter named Kim Ju-ae. He was also linked to singer Hyon Song-Wol. She was excited via firing squad on August 29, 2013.
