ORIGIN
Kid Ink (formerly “Rockstar”) is an American rapper, songwriter, music producer, and performer. He’s signed to RCA Records, Tha Alumni Group, and 88 Classic. His full-length projects include Up & Away (2012), My Own Lane (2014), and Full Speed (2015). Since his debut, he’s collaborated with acts like Chris Brown, Meek Mill, Dej Loaf and Fifth Harmony. Given name, Brian Todd Collins, he was born on April 1, 1986, in Los Angeles, California. He drew early inspiration from the works of Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and Pharrell Williams. As a teen, he would enroll in after-school programs for music. It gave him access to the necessary tools needed to produce hip-hop beats. His first legit production credit was a 2008 track for Nipsey Hussle.
CAREER
Collins began using the stage name “Rockstar” in 2009. His debut mixtape, World Tour, was released as a free download in February 2010. The tape caught the attention of DJ Ill Will, which led to a contract with Tha Alumni Group and 88 Classic. Upon signing, he changed his moniker from “Rockstar” to “Kid Ink” to prevent confusion with fellow labelmate DJ Rockstar. Kid In released 3 more mixtapes: Crash Landing (2010), Daydreamer (2011), and Wheels Up (2011). The success of the tapes earned him a spot on the 2012 XXL Freshman Class. He was joined by the likes of Macklemore, French Montana and Danny Brown.
Kid Ink’s debut studio album, Up & Away, was released in June 2012 by Tha Alumni Music Group. It peaked at #20 and #3 on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart respectively. The album was supported by the singles “Time of Your Life” and “Lost in the Sauce.” His 5th mixtape, Rocketshipshawty, was released in November 2012. Kid Ink signed with RCA Records in January 2013. The EP, Almost Home, his RCA debut, arrived in May 2013. It included tracks like “Money and the Power” and “Bad Ass” featuring Meek Mill and Wale. His second studio album, My Own Lane, dropped in January 2014. It sold 50K copies during opening week and went on to achieve Gold Certification by the RIAA. The album featured Chris Brown on the singles “Show Me” and “Main Chick.” Guest verses were also made by Tyga, Pusha T and Machine Gun Kelly among others.
Kid Ink kicked off 2015 with his 3rd album, Full Speed, topping both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the Top Rap Albums chart. The album was spearheaded by the single “Body Language” featuring Tinashe and Usher. Other notable tracks include “Hotel” with Chris Brown, “Dolo” with R. Kelly, and “Be Real” with Dej Loaf. Kid Ink followed up with two more tapes: Summer in the Winter (2015) and RSS2 (2016). His second EP, 7 Series, hit the airwaves in May 2017. It included the single “F with U” featuring Ty Dolla Sign. In 2018, Kid Ink collaborated with Rich The Kid on the track “No Budget.” He was featured on the single “Vibe” from Dizzy Wright’s EP, Don’t Tell Me It Can’t Be Done (2018).
