Kevin Gates is an American rapper and singer. He was born Kevin Jerome Gilyard on February 5, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in Baton Rouge and started rapping at the age of 14. Gates was raised by his mother and he also spent a lot of time at his grandparents house. He attended Baton Rouge Community College briefly before dropping out.

CAREER
Gates first gained attention with the release of his mixtape “Pick Of Da Litter” in 2007. He released the successful single “Get in the Way” in 2008 alongside Lil Boosie. He was locked up and released from prison in 2011. He returned to music and worked briefly with Lil Wayne‘s Young Money Entertainment. He released the mixtapes ‘Make ’em Believe’ in 2012 followed by ‘The Luca Brasi Story’ in 2013.

Gates was signed to Atlantic Records in February 2013. His street album ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ was released months later and peaked at #37 on the Billboard 200. His second street album ‘By Any Means’ dropped in 2014 and peaked at #17 on the Billboard charts. Gates’ debut studio album ‘Islah’ named after his daughter was released on January 29, 2016. The album was released by Bread Winners’ Association and distributed by Atlantic Records. It featured the singles “Kno One”, “La Familia”, and “The Truth”.

Kevin Gates has a net worth of $1 million. He married longtime girlfriend “Shadreka Haynes” in 2015. They have two children; Islah and Khaza. Gates was sentenced to 30 months in prison for Chicago gun charges. He pleaded guilty and his sentence was handed down on April 26, 2017. He was released in January 2018 after serving 9 months.
