Upton was born Katherine Elizabeth Upton on June 10, 1992 in St. Joseph Michigan. Here parents are Shelley and Jeff. She has three siblings. Upton grew up in Melbourne, Florida, where she attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. She competed as a equestrian prior to modeling and acting.

Upton attended a casting and was signed Elite Model Management in 2008. She later moved to New York City where she landed a contract with IMG Models.
