Kara McCullough is an American scientist and beauty pageant titleholder. She was crowned as Miss USA in May 2017. Kara Deidra McCullough was born on September 9, 1991, in Naples, Italy. Her father, Artensel E. McCullough Sr., served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and her mother is Betty Ann Parker. Being a military child, she lived in various places like Japan, Hawaii, and South Korea. The family eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia. McCullough is a graduate of South Carolina State University. She completed a BS degree in chemistry with a focus in radiochemistry. Prior to graduating, she served as a member of the American Chemical Society and the Health Physics Society.

CAREER
McCullough served as the 75th Miss South Carolina State University from 2012 to 2013. Her slogan was “Keep Your Coins, Inspire for Change”. It served to empower African-American women in such fields as engineering, math, and science. McCullough competed and finished 2nd place in the 2015 and the 2016 Miss District of Columbia USA. The third time was the charm, she was crowned Miss District of Columbia 2017 in December 2016. The title was previously held by Deshauna Barber.

McCullough competed and won the Miss USA 2017 pageant title. Her victory marked the 7th titleholder not born in the United States. The competition was held on May 14, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Other top contenders were New Jersey’s Chhavi Verg and Minnesota’s Meridith Gould. McCullough’s response to questions dealing with health care and feminism sparked social media debate. She states that affordable health care for U.S. citizens is a privilege and not a right. McCullough will represent the United States at the 2017 Miss Universe pageant.

Outside of pageantry, McCullough works as a physical scientist at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She’s also known for founding the outreach program, Science Exploration for Kids (SE4K). The program features interactive activities for young kids. It also provides math and science tutoring.

PERSONAL
Kara McCullough is 5ft 10in tall and she’s of Italian and African-American ancestry. She supported the “natural hair movement” by competing with her natural hair in the Miss USA pageantry. McCullough was inducted into the National Society of Black Engineers.
