ORIGIN
Jonathan Hay is best known for his work promoting Rihanna‘s debut single “Pon de Replay.” In 2005, he gained wide recognition for his controversial tactics publicizing “Pon de Replay,” which landed at number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. A decade later, in 2015, Hay went on Inside Edition and publicly apologized to Beyoncé and Jay-Z for those publicity stunts in front of a national TV audience. In 2016, Hay produced ‘When Music Worlds Collide’ with SiriusXM’s King Tech which was awarded ‘TIDAL Rising’ by Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s streaming service, TIDAL.
Hay has produced 6 albums that have topped the Billboard charts in both jazz and hip-hop. As a celebrity publicist, Hay has worked with high-profile artists such as Michael Jackson, Suge Knight, Whitney Houston, Eric B. & Rakim, Wiz Khalifa, Ice Cube and many others. Hay recently helped Travis James Entertainment launch the career of Instagram sensation, Funny Mike, with the 22 Savage parody of rap star 21 Savage. Funny Mike is currently staring on Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out. At this present time, Hay is releasing music through the Fat Beats record label who distributes Vinyl for artists such as Adele, Billie Eilish and many more.
CAREER
According to AllMusic, Jonathan Hay was adopted and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where his mother, a pianist, encouraged his career in music. As a teenager, he discovered a local music studio while attending college. His first taste of the music industry was working with Michael Jackson’s MJJ Productions for the Australian hip-hop duo Quo. Hay’s big breakthrough came from his hometown friend Travis Meeks’ group “Days of the New,” who released four hits, including one single that broke the modern-rock record by staying at #1 on the Billboard for 17 weeks. Hay had to watch Nicole Scherzinger leave his Days of the New camp and rise to fame as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Hay worked for Whitney Houston via her father John Houston’s Entertainment company. He worked alongside Kevin Skinner and John Houston; together they helped mastermind Whitney Houston’s $100 million deal with L.A. Reid and Arista Records.
Business mogul Mike Smith and Jonathan Hay formed Smith and Hay, a production team out of Charlotte, North Carolina with a reported capital raise of $30 million. They helped launch the BET TV Show “One Shot” starring DJ Khaled, RZA, T.I., DJ Drama, and Sway Calloway. Smith and Hay have had their most success in the Jazz genre, having three different albums hit #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts. Ironically, they also had a Christian single that topped the charts. Smith and Hay are independent, with a multi-million dollar catalog featuring a ton of major artists with close to a billion streams across all platforms, constantly earning around-the-clock. Smith advises Hay with his award-winning publicity companies, ‘Jonathan Hay Publicity’ and ‘Jonathan Hay Celebrity.’ The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Huffington Post, and Fox News have all called Hay a crisis-management and publicity expert.
As stated in Forbes, Jonathan Hay and Benny Reid’s ‘Follow the Leader (Re-imagined as Jazz)’ hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Jazz Charts, putting an end to the 38-week reign of Michael Bublé’s Love. Reid and Hay have a sync-licensing deal with Seven Seas Music and make a fortune from various high-level placements.
PERSONAL
It’s well known that Ranna Royce lived with Jonathan Hay from 2017 to 2019 after she broke off her five years engagement with Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Both Hay and Royce have stated: they were only friends with a special connection, who were there for each other after
both their previous relationships split up. Aside from their friendship, they co-produced ‘The Whoodlum Ball’ together with the legendary DJ Whoo Kid which performed well on the Billboard Charts.
Hay is best friends with popular Canadian model Aneesa Badshaw. In October of 2019, Hay was quoted in Billboard Magazine that he had met the love of his life at Quad Studios in New York City. He told the My One Amor publication that he had fallen in love with a girl from London with a “heavy British accent”. Hay also discusses his new girlfriend in a Google Cameos interview, saying she inspires him and calling her his “muse”. There is still a level of privacy about his love life, as he has yet to say her name, leading some people to speculate that she’s a celebrity or public figure.
