Johnny Weir is an American figure skater and 2x Olympian from Coatesville, Pennsylvania. His accolades include 2x Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, 3x US Figure Skating Champion, and the 2001 World Junior Figure Skating Champion. He took home bronze at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships. Outside of the ring, Weir is an accomplished television commentator. He served as an NBC commentator alongside Terry Gannon and Tara Lipinski during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Weir made his debut as a figure skating analyst for NBC at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. He starred in the reality series ‘Be Good Johnny Weir’ and the documentary film ‘Pop Star On Ice.’

John Garvin Weir was born on July 2, 1984, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He spent his early years in Quarryville. His dad, John, played football linebacker in high school, and his mom, Patti, worked as a home inspector. He has a younger brother named Brian. Before skating, Weir was more drawn to horseback riding. He competed and won several equestrian competitions by the age of 10. The family ended up moving to Little Britain, Connecticut so that he could receive proper training. It wasn’t until age 12 that Weir began pursuing skating seriously. His newly found passion prompted the family to move to Newark, Delaware, in 1996. Weir attended Newark High School followed by the University of Delaware. He studied linguistics before dropping out to focus on skating.

CAREER
In addition to Newark (Delaware), Weir has also trained in Simsbury (Connecticut), Wayne (New Jersey), and Moscow (Russia). He’s worked with coaches Viktor Petrenko, Priscilla Hill, and Galina Zmievskaya. In 2001, Weir competed and won gold at the World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He faced off against Evan Lysacek among others. Weir won 3 back-to-back U.S. National Championships from 2004 to 2006. Weir competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. He finished 5th and 6th respectively. Weir was the subject of the documentary film Pop Star on Ice (2009). He was profiled in the reality series ‘Be Good Johnny Weir’ on the Sundance Channel.

Weir officially retired from competitive skating in 2013. The following year he was picked up by NBC as a commentator for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. He was accompanied by play-by-play commentator Terry Gannon and 1998 Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski. Weir was cast as “Gabriel Richardson” in the Netflix sports drama series Spinning Out (2020). He had a cameo in the film Zoolander 2 (2016) starring Ben Stiller. He’s also made appearances on shows like Happy!, Family Guy, The Love Bomb with Nico Tortorella, and The Masked Singer.
