ORIGIN
John McCain was an American politician, U.S. State Senator, 2008 Republican presidential nominee, and war veteran. He was born John Sidney McCain III on August 29, 1936, in Coco Solo, Panama. His mother, Roberta, was an oil heiress, and his father, John S. McCain Jr., was a U.S. Navy admiral. He had two siblings, Sandy and Joe. McCain attended Episcopal High School (1954) followed by the United States Naval Academy (1958). He graduated from flight school in 1960 and from the National War College in 1974.

CAREER
McCain served during the Vietnam War as a naval aviator. He flew ground-attack aircraft but on October 26, 1967, he was shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was on his 23rd air mission at the time. McCain was held captive and tortured as a prisoner of war from 1967 to 1973. He declined multiple offers of early release in order to stay true to the military code of conduct. McCain spent close to 6 years in various camps before gaining his freedom on March 14, 1973. His release came a few weeks after the Vietnam cease-fire took effect. Upon his return, McCain was honored with the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star. He retired from his post as Navy captain in 1981.

McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, a position he held until 1987. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986, replacing Arizona’s Barry Goldwater. He was re-elected for a fourth term as Senator in 2010. He also served as Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, and later as Chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. McCain ran but lost the 2000 Republican presidential nomination to George W. Bush. He gained the nomination in 2008 but lost the presidential election to Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

PERSONAL
John McCain died on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81. His reported cause of death was glioblastoma (brain cancer). He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July 2017. His death came one day after he halted his cancer treatment.

McCain was 5ft 8in tall and has was of English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $16 million. McCain was married to model ‘Carol Shepp’ from 1965 to 1980. They had three children, Douglas, Andrew, and Sidney. He wed his second wife ‘Cindy Hensley’ in May 1980. They had four children, Meghan, John, James, and Bridget.
