ORIGIN
Joseph Medicine Crow was a Crow historian, anthropologist and author. He was the last surviving war chief of the Crow Tribe. Crow was born on October 27, 1913 near Lodge Grass, Montana. He attended Bacone College in 1928 followed by Linfield College in 1938. He completed his master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Southern California in 1939. He’s since received several honorary doctorates from different universities.
CAREER
Crow served in the United States Army from 1943-1946. He fought in World War II and was a scout in the 103rd Infantry Division. During the war he successfully completed the four tasks needed to become a war chief. Crow was appointed tribal historian and anthropologist in 1948. He’s authored several books including From the Heart of Crow Country (1992), Brave Wolf and the Thunderbird (1998), and Counting Coup (2006). He’s appeared in several documentaries including the PBS 2007 mini-series, The War.
Crow was honored with the Presidential Medial of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009. He’s also received the Bronze Star and the French Legion of Honor in 2008 for his military accomplishments.
