Joe Biden is an American Democratic politician from Delaware. He is the 46th and current president of the United States. His candidacy for the 2020 presidential election was announced on April 25, 2019. Biden served as the 47th Vice President of the United States under the Obama Administration. He served as a US Senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. He also served as Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chair of the International Narcotics Control Caucus, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Member of the New Castle County Council.

Given name, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., he was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His parents were Catherine Finnegan and Joseph Biden Sr. He has 3 younger siblings, James, Francis, and Valerie. The family moved to Delaware when he was about 13-yr old. Biden attended the Roman Catholic school ‘Archmere Academy’ where he also dabbled in football and baseball. He earned his BA in history and political science from the University of Delaware (1965), and his JD from Syracuse University College of Law (1968). He was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1969.

In 1968, Biden clerked at a Wilmington law firm. He became a public defender in 1969 and by 1970 he landed a spot on the New Castle County Council. Biden registered as a Democrat in 1969. He was previously registered as an Independent. In 1972, at age 29, Biden defeated incumbent Republican Senator J. Caleb Boggs for the US Senate seat for Delaware. He was sworn into office on January 5, 1973. His election was significant because he was only the 5th-youngest senator in US history at the time. Biden won 6 re-elections. He retired in 2009 and was succeeded by Ted Kaufman.

During his tenure, Biden served as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee (1987-95), where he tackled issues ranging from gun policies to civil liberties. He voted against the Gulf War in 1991 and supported the US/NATO intervention in the Bosnian War in 1994-95. His efforts were instrumental in the passing of the ‘Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act’ and the ‘Violence Against Women Act.’ Biden served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2001-03 and from 2007-09. The 2008 Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, defeated Republican nominee, John McCain, to become the 44th president of the United States. Obama was re-elected for a second term in 2012. Biden served as Vice President of the United States for two terms under the Obama Administration. He was the first Roman Catholic in US history to hold that office. While in office, Biden aided with the Recovery Act of 2009, the Job Creation Act of 2010, the Budget Control Act of 2011, and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2017.

On February 7, 2017, the University of Pennsylvania named Biden the Benjamin Franklin presidential practice professor. On April 25, 2019, Biden announced his campaign and intention to run in the 2020 presidential election. It marked his 3rd bid for the US presidency. His presidential campaign was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Biden defeated incumbent Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States. His running mate, Kamala Harris, succeeded Mike Pence as vice president. They were both sworn into office on January 20, 2021.
