Before his presidency, Carter was a peanut farmer, State Senator, and 76th Governor of Georgia (1971-1975). He became the 39th president of the U.S. after defeating his opponent Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election. Carter ran for re-election but lost to Ronald Reagan in 1980. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work with the Carter Center.
