Jeff Sessions is an American politician, former junior U.S. Senator from Alabama, and member of the Republican Party. He served as the 84th Attorney General of the United States under President Donald Trump. Sessions was born Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III on December 24, 1946 in Selma, Alabama. His father, Jefferson Sr., was a country store owner. Sessions grew up in Hybart, Alabama, and was a member of the Eagle Scout. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Huntingdon College in 1969 followed by his JD from the University of Alabama in 1973. He was a member of the Young Republicans while at Huntingdon.
CAREER
Sessions was enlisted in the United States Army Reserve from 1973 through 1986. He rose to the rank of captain. He also worked as an attorney in private practice in Russellville and in Mobile. Sessions served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Alabama’s Southern District from 1975 to 19777. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. He held that office for 12 years until 1993.
In 1994, Sessions was elected as the 44th Attorney General of Alabama. He was sworn into office on January 16, 1995. Sessions defeated Democrat Roger Bedford in 1996 for the U.S. Senate seat from Alabama. He was re-elected in 2002, 2008 and 2014. Sessions was a major supporter and policy advisor to Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. He officially endorsed Trump on February 28, 2016. They share common interests such as the building of a border wall, and opposition to abortion and same sex marriages. Sessions was elected as the 84th Attorney General of the United States. He was succeeded by Matthew Whitaker in November 2018.
