Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur, business leader, investor, and philanthropist. He’s the founder, chairman, and CEO of Amazon. He’s also one of the world’s wealthiest with a personal net worth exceeding $115 billion. Bezos was born Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His biological parents Jacklyn and Ted Jorgensen separated when he was still a toddler. His mother re-married to Mike Bezos, a Cuban immigrant, and Exxon engineer. He was about 4 at the time. Bezos and his family moved to Miami, Florida when he was a teenager. He attended Miami Palmetto High School followed by Princeton University in New Jersey. He graduated in 1986 with a BS degree in electrical engineering and computer science.

CAREER
Post-college, Bezos worked at several firms including ‘Bankers Trust’ and ‘Fitel’. He was named the vice president of the hedge fund ‘D. E. Shaw & Co.’ in 1990. Bezos quit his high-paying Wall Street job and moved to Seattle, Washington in 1994. That same year he founded Amazon.com while working out of his garage. The name ‘Amazon’ was derived from the South American River. The company gained early success selling books across the United States and other foreign countries. Amazon.com went public in 1997 and has since become the largest internet-based retailer. The company expanded its offerings to music, Videos, apparel, software, electronics, video games, food, jewelry, and more. They’re also known for their popular ‘Kindle’ e-readers and for their cloud infrastructure services through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazon employs more than 340,000 workers and has total assets exceeding $160 billion.

Bezos founded the aerospace company ‘Blue Origin’ in 2000. The company is privately funded and is based in Kent, Washington. Blue Origin develops technologies and offers spaceflight services. Bezos purchased ‘The Washington Post’ newspaper for a reported $250 million in 2013. The sale was finalized by Bezos’ Nash Holdings LLC in October 2013. His other investments include ‘Google’ and ‘Unity Biotechnology’. The Bezos Expeditions has funded several companies including Airbnb, Nextdoor, Stack Exchange, and Uber. He’s also donated millions to nonprofit projects like the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
