Jeannie Ortega is an American pop singer/songwriter, actress, and television host. The single “Crowded” featuring Papoose became her first song to grace the Billboard Hot 100. Her full-length projects include No Place Like BKLYN (2006), Perfect Love (2012), and Love Changed Me (2016). Jeannie began her recording career with Hollywood Records. She’s currently signed to AIC Records. Her screen credits include the film Step Up (2006) and the ABC series One Life to Live. Jeannie was born Jeannette Ortega on November 19, 1986, in Brooklyn, New York. She has a sister named Yoselyn. Ortega grew up in the neighborhood of Bushwick. She attended Brooklyn High School of the Arts, graduating in 2002.
CAREER
Ortega started out as one-half the music/dance duo ‘Sugar and Spice.’ She created an early buzz with the song “Got What It Takes” which was featured on the soundtrack to Love Don’t Cost a Thing (2003) starring Nick Cannon. Her next song to pick up steam “Future Is Clear” was added to the soundtrack of Disney’s That’s So Raven. Ortega would eventually sign to Hollywood Records, a subsidiary of Disney. She spent a number of years performing on the tween-pop Radio Disney circuit. Her Hollywood Records debut “It’s R Time” was released in October 2005. The track garnered positive reviews and was later added to the soundtrack of Freedom Writers (2007 starring Hilary Swank. Ortega opened for Rihanna during her 2006 nationwide tour. She would later tour with acts like Luis Fonsi, Frankie J, and Nina Sky among others.
Ortega’s debut studio album, No Place Like BKLYN, was released in August 2006. It charted at #127 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top Heatseekers Albums chart. The album was supported by the singles “Crowded”, “It’s R Time” and “So Done.” The Papoose collab “Crowded” became her most popular song, peaking at #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #44 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. The official music video has been viewed more than 890K times on YouTube. Ortega and Hollywood Records parted ways in 2007. Following her departure, she signed to AIC Records. She released two Christian albums Perfect Love (2012) and Love Changed Me (2016). Her discography also includes the EPs New Day (2011) and Road to 31 (2018).
PERSONAL
In addition to music, Ortega has a few acting credits to her name. She was cast as a singer in the romantic dance flick Step Up (2006) opposite Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. She guest-starred on a July 2006 episode of the ABC soap opera ‘One Life to Live.’ She currently hosts her own show ‘In The Mix’ on TBN Salsa. Ortega is about 5ft 4in tall and she’s of Puerto Rican descent. She married Rev. Renn Law in December 2009.
