James Gunn is an American screenwriter, film director, and actor. He directed the film Super (2008) and the MCU films Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). His credits include Dawn of the Dead (2004), Slither (2006), and The Belko Experiment (2016). He’s also had some success as a novelist and musician. James Francis Gunn Jr. was born on August 5, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri. His parents are James and Leota. He has siblings Sean, Brian, Matt, Patrick, and Beth. He was raised in a Roman Catholic family. Gunn attended Jesuit St. Louis University High School (1984) followed by Saint Louis University (1992). He completed his Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Columbia University (1995). He also spent two years studying film at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.

CAREER
Gunn began making short films with his brothers at age 12. He was inspired by such films as Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Friday the 13th (1980). Gunn was hired by the independent film company Troma Entertainment in 1995. His first screenwriting project was Tromeo and Juliet (1996). Next, he wrote, directed, and appeared in the BBC series The Tromaville Cafe (1997-2000). Gunn wrote the scripts for The Specials (2000), Scooby-Doo (2002), and Dawn of the Dead (2004). He wrote and directed the horror-comedy Slither (2006) starring Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks. He co-created the Spike web series James Gunn’s PG Porn (2008-09) alongside his brothers Brian and Sean.

Gunn wrote and directed the superhero film Super (2010). The film stars Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page. It made $422 million on a $2.5 million budget. Gunn’s credits also include The Belko Experiment (2016) and the video game Lollipop Chainsaw (2012). He served as executive producer for Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The first installment earned him a Saturn Award for best director. In July 2018, Gunn was fired by Walt Disney Studios over controversial tweets that were posted between 2008 and 2009. In addition to films, Gunn is a musician and novelist. He formed and served as the lead vocalist of the band ‘The Icons’ from 1989 to the mid-1990s. Their studio album, Mom, We Like It Here on Earth, was released in 1994. It was supported by the singles “Sunday” and “Walking Naked”.
