Jacques Rivette was an acclaimed French film director, film critic and one of the leading figure in the French New Wave movement. He was born on March 1, 1928 in Rouen, France. He studied at the Lycée Pierre-Corneille as a child. He moved to Paris in 1949 to pursue a career in filmmaking.
CAREER
Rivette frequently attended movie screenings at the Cinémathèque Française among other ciné-clubs. His first short film ‘Aux quatre coins’ was released in 1949 followed by ‘Le quadrille’ in 1950. He started writing for the magazine, Cahiers du Cinéma, in 1953 and became editor during the 1960s. He made a total of 28 films including ‘The Nun (1966)’, ‘Out 1 (1971)’, ‘La Belle Noiseuse (1991)’ and his most recent ‘Around a Small Mountain (2009)’.
