ORIGIN
Imre Kertész was a Hungarian novelist, Nobel Literature Prize winner and Holocaust concentration camp survivor. He’s best known for the novel, Fatelessness. He was born to a Jewish family on November 9, 1929 in Budapest, Hungary. Kertész was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp at the age of 14 and later to Buchenwald. He was liberated in 1945.
CAREER
Upon his return to Hungary, Kertész worked for the Budapest newspaper, Világosság, until 1951. He then served two years of military service. His first novel, Sorstalanság, was published in 1975. It told the story of his experience in the concentration camps. The English translation ‘Fateless’ was published in 1992 followed by the second translation ‘Fatelessness’ in 2004. It was later adopted into a 2005 film directed by Lajos Koltai. Kertész was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002. Other awards and honors include the Herder Prize (2000), Goethe Prize (2004) and the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary (2014).
