Harvey Weinstein is an American film producer and co-founder of Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company. His film credits include Pulp Fiction (1994), Good Will Hunting (1997), and Shakespeare in Love (1998). Weinstein was born to parents Max and Miriam on March 19, 1952, in Queens, New York. His father was a diamond cutter. He has a younger brother named Bob. Weinstein attended John Bowne High School followed by the University at Buffalo. He graduated with a BA degree in 1973. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Buffalo in 2000.
CAREER
After college, Weinstein, his brother Bob, and Corky Burger launched a concert promotion business. They purchased a theater in downtown Buffalo, where produced rock concerts as Harvey & Corky Productions. The Weinstein brothers co-founded the independent film distribution company ‘Miramax Films’ in 1979. Their first major hit was Martin Lewis’ The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball (1982). The followed up with Errol Morris’ documentary film, The Thin Blue Line (1988). Miramax became the most successful independent studio in the U.S. with the release of Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars James Spader and Andie MacDowell. Other early films include My Left Foot (1989) with Daniel Day-Lewis, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990) with Victoria Abril, and The Crying Game (1992) with Stephen Rea.
Miramax Films was acquired by Disney for $80 million in 1993. Their first blockbuster was Pulp Fiction (1994). The film was directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman. Miramax won an Academy Award for Best Picture for The English Patient (1996). Other films include Clerks (1994), Good Will Hunting (1997), Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Chicago (2002). The Weinstein brothers left Miramax in 2005 to start their own production company The Weinstein Company. Their notable productions include The King’s Speech (2010), The Artist (2011), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), The Butler (2013), and Lion 2016). Harvey served as co-chairman of The Weinstein Company from 2005 to 2017. He was fired by the board in October 2017 amidst allegations of sexual misconduct.
