ORIGIN 
Herbert Raymond McMaster is a Lieutenant General in the United States Army. He served one year as National Security Advisor under President Donald Trump. McMaster was born on July 24, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. McMaster attended Valley Forge Military Academy (1980) followed by the United States Military Academy (1984). He completed his Masters and Ph.D. in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
CAREER
McMaster was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1984. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood where he served with the 1st Battalion 66th Armor Regiment. McMaster was assigned to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Warner Barracks, Germany from 1989 to 1992. He served during the Persian Gulf War, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and during the war in Afghanistan.
McMaster served as Commanding General, Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, from 2012 to 2014. He currently serves as Director, Army Capabilities Integration Center and Deputy Commanding General, Futures, US Army Training, and Doctrine Command. On February 20, 2017, McMaster was sworn in as the 26th National Security Advisor under the Trump administration. Trump’s original pick, Michael Flynn, resigned on February 13, 2017, after 24 days in office. McMaster resigned from his post as National Security Advisor on March 22, 2018. He was succeeded by John R. Bolton.
McMaster taught military history at West Point from 1994 to 1996. His book, Dereliction of Duty, was published in 1997 by Harper Perennial. The book talks about the military’s role during the Vietnam War and it was written as part of his ph.D. thesis at UNC. It criticized a number of high-ranking military officers for not challenging President Lyndon B. Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara.
