Hayward began his basketball career at Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana. He led the team to the Indiana Class 4A state championship his senior year. He averaged 18 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and was named first team All-State for the 2007-08 season. He was also competitive in tennis. Hayward received scholarship offers from IUPUI, Purdue, and Butler. He committed to Butler University where he majored in computer engineering. Hayward played two seasons of basketball for the Butler Bulldogs. He averaged 14.4 points, 7.4, rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 steals. His college honors include 2× First-team All-Horizon League, and 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year. He competed and won gold at the 2009 U-19 World Championship as a member of Team USA.

Hayward was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 9th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. He played 7 seasons with the Jazz from 2010 to 2017. As a rookie, he averaged 16.9 minutes and 5.4 points per game. He competed in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge as a member of Team Chuck . Hayward became a starter during the 2011-12 season.
