George Gaynes was a Finnish-American actor best known for his roles in the ‘Police Academy’ and ‘Punky Brewster’ series. He was born George Jongejans on May 16, 1917 in Helsinki, Finland. He served in the Dutch and British Navies during World War II.
CAREER
Gaynes started out as a singer and Broadway performer in the 1940s. He appeared in the productions of ‘Wonderful Town’, ‘Out of This World’ and ‘My Fair Lady’. He played the memorable role of “Henry Warnimont” on the NBC sitcom, Punky Brewster. He was later cast as “Commandant Lassard” in the Police Academy movies. Other notable film and television appearances include ‘Tootsie’, ‘The Way We Were’ and ‘The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd’. He retired from acting in 2003.
