Garrison Keillor is an American radio host, author, and voice actor. He’s best known for hosting the variety show ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ on Minnesota Public Radio (MPR). He created the fictional town ‘Lake Wobegon’ and the fictional private detective ‘Guy Noir’. His published works include Lake Wobegon Days (1985) and Homegrown Democrat (2004). Keillor was born Gary Edward Keillor on August 7, 1942, in Anoka, Minnesota. His parents were John (d. 2001) and Grace (d. 2012). He’s one of six children. Keillor attended Anoka High School followed by the University of Minnesota. He graduated in 1966 with a BA degree in English.

CAREER
In 1969, Keillor began his tenure at MPR as a radio announcer. He hosted the variety show ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ from 1974 until his retirement in July 2016. The show includes a popular segment called “News from Lake Wobegon”. Musician Chris Thile took over as the new host in October 2016. The show also spawned the comedy film, A Prairie Home Companion (2006), directed by Robert Altman. The main cast include Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, and Meryl Streep. Keillor hosted ‘The Writer’s Almanac’ from 1993 to 2017. He lent his voice to the PBS documentary miniseries The Civil War (1990). He supplied the voice for American poet Walt Whitman. Keillor was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1994. His accolades include a Grammy Award and a George Foster Peabody Award.

Keillor has written several books and poetry. His Lake Wobegon books include Lake Wobegon Days (1985), Wobegon Boy (1987), Pontoon: A Novel of Lake Wobegon (2007), and Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance (2009). His other published works include Happy to Be Here (1981), Homegrown Democrat (2004), Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny (2012), 77 Love Sonnets (2009), and Good Poems for Hard Times (2005). He’s also written for The New Yorker magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and National Geographic.
