ORIGIN 
Ernestine Anderson was a Jazz and blues vocalist with a career spanning more than fifty years. She was born on November 11, 1928 in Houston, Texas. She had a twin sister named ‘Josephine’. Anderson sang in her local church choir as a teenager. She moved to Seattle, Washington with her family in 1944. She attended Garfield High School and sang with the Bumps Blackwell Junior Band.
CAREER
Anderson began touring at the age of 18. She traveled and performed with the Johnny Otis Band for a year. She later served in the Lionel Hampton band from 1952-1953. Anderson made her first recording on Gigi Gryce’s 1955 album, Nica’s Tempo. She recorded her first album, Hot Cargo, in 1956 and it was released by Mercury Records in 1958.
In 1976, Anderson was signed to Concord Records. She released a string of albums with Concord starting with “Hello, Like Before” in 1977. She followed suit with the Grammy nominated albums ‘Never Make Your Move Too Soon (1981)’ and ‘Big City (1983)’. Anderson left Concord and was signed to Quincy Jones‘ Qwest label in 1993. She picked up two more Grammy nominations for the albums ‘Now and Then (1993)’ and ‘Blues, Dues & Love News (1996)’.

Ernestine Anderson passed away on March 10, 2016 at the age of 87. The cause of death was not disclosed. Anderson was married three times. She’s survived by three children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
