ORIGIN
Ella Mai is an English R&B singer and songwriter out of Southern London, England. She is named after the famous jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. Released in 2017, “Boo’d Up,” her breakout hit single, went platinum in June of the following year. Ella Mai Howell was born on November 3, 1994. She is the daughter of a Jamaican mother and an Irish father. Her mother, a teacher, played a major role in her upbringing. Overly interested in music, Ella Mai got enrolled in a performing arts school from an early age.

At the age of 12, her family migrated to New York City and settled in Jamaica, Queens. She attended Queens High School of Teaching in Glen Oaks. Ella Mai immediately experienced culture shock. She uploaded covers of Chris Brown, Fetty Wap, and 2pac, among others. After uploading a cover of Fetty Wap’s hit single “679,” she got noticed by American record producer, DJ Mustard. In January 2016, DJ Mustard would sign her to his 10 Summer Label and the two began working together.

Under her new manager, Ella Mai released a trilogy of EPs. The first, “Time,” released in 2016, featured notable single “She Don’t” with Ty Dolla Sign. The Second EP, “Change,” released the same year, performed commercially well. Her third EP, “Ready,” hit airwaves in early 2017. The project featured her breakout hit single “Boo’d Up.” Despite a slow start, the song eventually gained traction and became her first top 10 songs in the U.S. The single reached #5 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100.

While Ella Mai dropped hits, she also participated in other events. She toured with Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage world tour and with Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic tour. Consequently, her popularity grew exponentially as her music and image were exposed to a worldwide audience. The exposure bolstered her hit single; “Boo’d Up” went platinum in June 2018. In August, Ella Mai released another charting single “Trip.” The song peaked at #11 on the Hot 100 chart. In October 2018, she released her self-titled debut album.
