Ed Snider Is Dead

ORIGIN
Edward Malcolm Snider was the founder and chairman of Comcast Spectator which owns the Philadelphia Flyers and the Wells Fargo Center. He was born on January 6, 1933 in the Washington, D.C. region. Ed worked with his father in the family’s grocery store business. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland.

CAREER
Snider started out as part owner of the record company, Edge Ltd. He sold the company and bought the Philadelphia Eagles in 1964 with Jerry Wolman and Earl Foreman. He held a 7% stake and served as the team’s vice president and treasurer. After successfully petitioning the National Hockey League, Snider was awarded an expansion club in 1966. The Philadelphia Flyers played and won their first game in 1967 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The franchise went on to win two consecutive championships from 1974-1975.

Snider was named Chairman of the Board of Spectrum in 1971. He founded the holding company, Comcast Spectator, three years later. In addition to the Flyers, they owned Comcast SportsNet, and the 76ers (1996-2011). Snider was also known for giving back to the community. He created the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2005. He’s also contributed to the Ayn Rand Institute and The Atlas Society. Snider was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.

PERSONAL
Ed Snider died on April 11, 2016 at the age of 83. His reported cause of death was bladder cancer. He was battling the deadly disease for two years. Snider was 5ft 11in tall and had a net worth of $2.5 billion. He was married four times to wives, Myrna, Martha McGeary, Christine Decroix and Lin Spivak. He’s survived by six children, Craig, Lindy, Jay, Sarena, Samuel and Tina, and several grandchildren.
